What Not to Feed Wild Birds: A Must-Read for Safe Backyard Feeding

We've all been tempted. You have a leftover piece of bread or a handful of crackers and think, "The birds would love this!" While the intention is good, many common human foods can be harmful to wild birds.

Understanding what not to feed birds is just as important as knowing what to offer. Following these bird feeding do’s and don’ts ensures your backyard remains a safe haven.

1. Bread and Bakery Goods

This is the most common mistake. Bread, crackers, and cookies are "junk food" for birds. They offer very little nutritional value and can cause health problems, including a condition called "angel wing" in waterfowl.

2. Salted Foods

Birds cannot process large amounts of salt. Salted nuts, chips, and popcorn can lead to dehydration and kidney damage.

3. Chocolate, Avocado, and Caffeine

These items are toxic to many animals, including birds. Chocolate contains theobromine, and even small amounts can be fatal. Persin in avocado and the stimulants in caffeine are also dangerous.

4. Honey and Raw Sugar

While birds eat natural nectar, honey can harbor bacteria and promote mold growth that is deadly to birds. Stick to proper nectar solutions for hummingbirds.

5. Dairy Products

Birds are largely lactose intolerant. Their digestive systems are not equipped to handle milk, cheese, or other dairy products, which can cause severe indigestion and diarrhea.
